Organic Pest Control

At Viking Pest, we know how important it is to our customers to have the option of organic pest control. Viking’s Organic pest control program is a natural pest control solution to rid your home of unwanted pests and the diseases they carry.

What is Organic Pest Control?

Our Organic program utilizes natural pesticides derived from organic materials, such as oils gathered from plants. Environmentally safe pest treatments allow you to effectively protect your home and the environment without the use of chemicals.

What are the Benefits of Organic Pest Control?

  • An organic pest control program utilizes natural pesticides to get rid of pests. This includes materials that are derived from organic sources, like oils gathered from plants.
  • Organic treatments mean that you don’t need to worry about your children or your pets spending time away from your home after a treatment.
  • Our organic treatments are eco-friendly compounds that are biodegradable and won’t hurt the environment
  • Our organic treatments will get rid of many different pests, including ants, cockroaches, ticks, rodents, moths, and beetles
  • Our organic treatments work in conjunction with our Integrated Pest Management (IPM) procedures, where we use exclusion techniques and environmental modifications to assist with the pest management control methods and effectively get rid of pest problems

Is Organic Pest Control More Expensive?

With the natural nature of organic pest control solutions, more treatments and applications may be necessary to protect your home from unwanted guests than if a non-organic pest control management solution is performed. If you are looking for pest control solutions that don’t rely heavily on the use of possibly dangerous pesticides, contact the professionals at Viking Pest. Our trained and knowledgeable technicians know how to effectively eliminate pests from your home using organic materials and IPM techniques. Our pest control services can help you eliminate pests that are currently in your home as well as prevent potential pest problems from occurring.

Spring Into Action Before Pests Do!

It’s that time of year again! The ice and snow are beginning to melt, the days are becoming longer, and warmer weather is right around the corner. After a long and cold winter, spring is more than welcome .... but with warmer weather, come warm weather pests. Spring may mean beautiful weather, but that's not all it brings. The warm days that we all wished for during those cold winter nights is the same weather that pests such as ants, spiders, and flies wished for too. Springtime has all these pests coming out of their winter homes to invade yours. To prevent a pest infestation this spring, check out our spring-cleaning tips:

Kitchen:

Open containers, crumbs, and food spills are an invitation for ants. Go through your pantry and cabinets to make sure that food items are properly closed and stored, making sure to wipe down the insides of your cabinets and throw away any dated items. Take your trash out regularly and make sure your sink is free of dirty dishes. After meal preparation, make sure to clean and sanitize counters and floors of any spills.

Bathroom:

After a dry winter, pests such as cockroaches and silverfish are attracted to moisture. The less water and moisture these pests have access to, the harder it is for them to survive. Make sure to keep bathroom floors dry and to fix leaky pipes in order to lower your chances of an infestation.

Living Spaces:

Pests are after three things: food, water, and shelter. Keeping your home clean will deter pests from wanting to roam, thus minimizing your risk of an infestation. Sweep and vacuum regularly, and always clean up spills and crumbs promptly to make it harder for pests to settle in.   Sometimes, even the best efforts and intentions cannot protect your home. While a clean and well-kept house will lower your chances of a pest infestation, some bugs just keep coming back. If this sounds familiar, give Viking Pest Control a call for a FREE and No-Obligation home inspection.

How To Prepare For Your Pest Control Visit

We all want a pest free home year round, and it starts with communication and participation with your Viking Technician.

Technicians will be walking around your home; please ensure we have access to all areas. If you have a locked gate, we will not be able to enter your backyard.

Clean any clutter from the floor, and countertops. This helps our technicians thoroughly detect for any presence of pests.

Make sure your home stays as neatly as possible afterward for long-term results. A good tip, when vacuuming, discard debris in a sealed bag, outside your home, then wipe down your vacuum before storing it.

If possible, move large furniture away from corners and walls. Doing so will give your technician easy access to common hiding areas.

Store all personal items, including food, small appliances, children's toys, blankets, or your pets watering bowls. This will helps keep valuable items away from treated areas.

When it comes to pets and small children, Viking Pest carries particular products for use in these situations. Please let our representatives know you have children, pets or are an expecting mother before they arrive.

Most Importantly, talk to your technician! Asking questions and show them where you spotted a pest or heard a noise. It is also good to ask your technician for any advice on your pest problems. Be sure to ask them to explain the process of getting rid of the pest. Viking Pest Technicians are always here to help with your pest needs. How To Keep Your Business Pest Free

Owning or managing a business is challenging enough without having to worry about pest control. And with strict regulations around commercial pest control, hiring a professional who specializes in commercial properties is your best option. To help maintain a pest free business and reduce the chance of pests, read the pest prevention tips listed below.

1. Cleaning

If your establishment includes perishable items and or a kitchen, deep cleaning once a month is not enough to keep pests and rodents away. Depending on your business, kitchens should be heavily cleaned on a weekly basis or even daily if applicable. Also, practice a First in First Out approach to storage to ensure that storage rooms are kept clean and there are no perishable items attracting pests

2. Check Shipments

When shipments come to your facility, double check pallets and boxes for signs of pests and rodents. These signs can include holes in boxes, or pest droppings. Noticing these signs is essential to avoid a pest infestation.

3. Keep doors closed

Although it may be tempting for convenience, keep entryways to your business closed as much as possible, so pests and rodents have a smaller probability of entering your facility. Especially during the colder months, pests are trying to find warmth, and your business can be very inviting to them.

4. Hire Viking Pest Control

It is crucial to hire a company that specializes in commercial properties, due to the specialization needed for pest control. Viking Pest offers SMART Technology that links wirelessly, providing 24/7 monitoring and communication giving us full control of the installation. How to Keep Pests Out of Firewood

Nothing can beat relaxing at home in front of a warm crackling fire as the frost of winter sets in. While enjoying the vibrant fire from the comfort of your home, the last thing you want to deal with is a pest invasion. Firewood, either chopped or bought, can contain pests and these pests will enjoy the warmth of your home and start invading. See Below for 3 Tips to Keep Pests Out of Firewood.
  1. Keep Firewood Off Of The Ground
It is important to keep firewood dry because insects are attracted to wet wood. Keeping your firewood elevated off the ground will help keep the wood dry. There are structures specifically made for storing firewood that you can purchase, or you can concoct your own storage with extra lumber or cinder blocks. 2. Keep Firewood Dry As stated above, insects are attracted to wet firewood so protecting your wood from moisture is key to a pest free home during the winter. Covering the wood with a tarp will protect the firewood from natural elements and keep it dry. 3.  Store Firewood Away from Your Home It may be tempting to store extra firewood inside to avoid having to go out in the cold air, but the longer firewood is stored inside and not being used, the higher chances of pests escaping from the wood and roaming your home. The farther away your stockpile is from your home, the harder it will be for pests to come inside. If pests still manage to find their way into your home this winter, call Viking Pest Control at 1-800-618-BUGS, and we will make sure that you can enjoy your fire in a pest-free home.

How to Control Pests During a Commercial Renovation

At some point, businesses will undergo a renovation and don’t realize the dark secret behind any remodeling project, not budgeting problems but rather PESTS! During any remodeling project, you’re laying down a welcome mat for insects and rodents. Not only are pests a nuisance, but they can also cause property damage leading to a costlier renovation than planned. With any business construction project, it’s important to follow these tips to keep your renovation running smoothly.

Before Renovation

  1. Have a pest management professional do a thorough inspection before you start renovating. They will be able to tell you if you have any pests present before you start the construction project.
  2. Talk to your pest professional about what pests are a problem in the area. Ask what pests are commonly found, and what the most common pest is that season.
  3. If demolition is planned, especially on structures that that may have been vacant, pre-demolition treatments can be performed to prevent spreading rodents when demolition occurs.  This is required by law in some areas.
  4. Discuss exterior lighting installation strategies with your pest management professional to greatly reduce the attractiveness of the building to many insect species.
  5. Consider having the construction site pre-treated for wood destroying insects like carpenter ants and termites.  Durable, environmentally conscious treatments can be applied to areas that will not be accessible for treatment later when construction is completed providing superior long-term control.
  6. Avoid wood to ground contact. This will make it harder for termites or other wood destroying insects to take advantage of these vulnerable areas.
  7. If possible, avoid cellulose building materials. Cellulose materials are made of wood in some shape or form and add as a food source for termites.
  8. Rodent bait stations and insect traps can be installed to aid in reducing populations of these pests prior to construction.
  9. Treatments may be applied to the exterior that will aid in reducing insect pressure before opening the building for construction.

During Renovation

When construction and renovation begin, your property can become even more susceptible to pests. Your site will become a heaven to pests such as termites, ants, and mice. This is why it is important to take note of the following measures to help prevent an infestation from happening.
  1. You will want to work with the pest management professionals that you have hired to set up additional traps. These traps will be set up around key entry points to the building site and near building materials. They will be baited to attract pests that might want to enter.
  2. You will want to make sure that your property or the building site is properly graded. This means that the water will flow away from the new structure or site. Many pests are attracted to water, so if water is minimized so are the pests.
  3. Always make sure your site is clean. Make sure food, trash, and wood debris are always picked up. You will want to dispose of waste properly as waste acts as a food and or shelter for many pests.
  4. It is advisable to consult a pest management professional prior to completion of renovations to identify small gaps and crevices that may allow rodents and insect pests into structures. These should then be sealed by your contractor prior to accepting the work on the final walkthrough.
  5. Lastly, make sure that any doors and windows are properly closed and sealed. If necessary install screens to ensure bugs, pests, or larger animals are not able to enter the property.

After Renovation

It is important to take preventative measures to avoid pests on your newly renovated property. Here are a few more items that could help you avoid pests.
  1. You may want to install sodium vapor lights. These lights are less attractive to flying insects.  Halogen and LED lighting can be very attractive to insects. Placement and type of lighting can be recommended by a pest management professional to reduce pest pressure.
  2. After the renovation, during landscaping phase, avoid planting plants too close to entrance ways. Consider placing the plants three feet. Having the plants to close to an entrance way can make it easier for insects to enter.
  3. When installing windows and doors, make sure they are tight as possible against the frame. Use weather stripping, door sweeps, and screens to avoid openings.
  4. Work with a pest management professional to create a plan for employees. This plan should include best sanitation practices, behavioral practices and what to do when they see pest activity.
There are many ways to avoid pests before renovations during and after renovations. At Viking Pest, we can work with property managers and business owners to create a personalized plan for any renovation as no two sites are the same.  If you like further information, please call 1-800-618-BUGS or visit Vikingpest.com/commercial to learn more.

Pest Removal Myths

Six pest-removal myths that should be eliminated

1. If you don’t see it, it’s not there

Pests have evolved to live alongside us and take advantage of our hospitality. Unless you check every inch of your home, you probably have some type of pest living with you.

2. Pests love dirt

“Dirt” is a matter of perception: You can scrub your home until it glistens, and it will not make a difference to many pests. However, we suggest always to tidy up some messes, as they’re potential food sources.

3. Just put the food out of reach

You can’t simply place food on a higher shelf or shut it behind a door. The smallest scrap of food can go a long way. If pests can’t get food and water from your home, they’ll set up camp in your home, and venture out to the yard for its meals.

4. Drive them out with high-frequency noise

It’s true that many pests can hear frequencies that we cannot detect. While pests are likely hearing these noise, this may not even bother them.

5. Animals hate hot peppers

Researchers have found treating areas with capsaicin does deter rats, but use the capsaicin to send them towards eating poison bait.

As for insects, they seem to think the spice is an actual heat source. So they will flee, but only to cooler area such as your basement.

6. Get a cat!

Unless your pet has free range from the attic to the basement, pests will hide where it can’t—go. And bad infestations will defy even any cat.

What actually works?

Your best bet is preventative repairs and cleaning. Weather-seal the outside of your home, fill in small spaces where rodents or insects might hide, seal up anything organic like shoe polish and trash. When all else fails, or when you are dealing with an infestation, call the professionals at Viking, we will be more than happy to deal with the problem.
