Carpet Beetle Control
Protect Your Home and Valuables from these Fabric-Destroying Pests
When most people think of fabric pests, they immediately worry about moths. But there’s another silent invader that can cause significant damage to your home’s fabrics and stored items: carpet beetles. These pests are frequently misidentified, and because their damage can occur slowly and out of sight, infestations often go unnoticed until it’s too late.
At Viking Pest Control, we help homeowners throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and the Eastern Shore of Maryland identify and eliminate carpet beetle infestations with proven solutions .
What Are Carpet Beetles?
Carpet beetles are small, oval-shaped insects that are commonly found in homes. Adult carpet beetles are often confused with bed bugs, but unlike bed bugs, carpet beetles don’t bite people. In fact, it’s not the adult beetles that cause damage—it’s their larvae.
Carpet beetles go through complete metamorphosis, meaning their juveniles (larvae) look nothing like the adults. This can make them difficult to recognize. While adult beetles are often found outside feeding on flowers and pollen, the larvae stay hidden inside homes, feeding on natural materials such as:
- Wool
- Silk
- Fur
- Feathers
- Leather
- Hair (including pet hair)
This makes carpets, clothing, upholstered furniture, taxidermy, and stored items particularly vulnerable.
Types of Carpet Beetles
There are three common types of carpet beetles found in homes:
- Black Carpet Beetle
Typically black or dark brown, these beetles are the most likely to be found indoors. - Varied Carpet Beetle
Small and round with a mottled pattern of white, brown, and yellow scales. - Furniture Carpet Beetle
Similar to the varied carpet beetle but often associated with upholstered furniture.
Each type follows a similar lifecycle and feeding pattern, targeting organic materials and thriving in low-traffic, undisturbed areas.
Where Carpet Beetles Hide
Carpet beetles prefer dark, quiet places where they can feed and develop undisturbed. Common hiding spots include:
- Underneath furniture
- Inside baseboard heaters
- In cracks and crevices of older homes
- Behind walls, especially in homes with horsehair plaster or wool insulation
- Among pet hair that accumulates under heavy appliances like refrigerators and stoves
Carpet beetles can even infest homes where pet fur builds up in hard-to-reach places, providing a steady food source.
Older homes can be particularly at risk. In the past, horsehair was often mixed into plaster, and some historic homes still have wool-based insulation, providing the perfect breeding ground for carpet beetles inside wall voids.
Why You’re Seeing Carpet Beetles Now
There’s a growing trend toward sustainable, natural fibers like wool, silk, and cotton—all of which carpet beetles love. Homes with fresh-cut flowers can carry in adult beetles from the outdoors.
Additionally, people who store fur coats, animal trophies, or other animal-derived items in basements, attics, or closets that they rarely open are at higher risk. Because the beetles develop slowly, infestations can go unnoticed for months or even years.
Are Carpet Beetles Harmful?

Carpet beetles don’t pose a direct health threat to humans or pets. They don’t bite or transmit diseases, but the damage they cause to carpets, clothing, furniture, and valuable keepsakes can be significant.
Although they aren’t as destructive as clothes moths, they can still leave unsightly holes and ruin irreplaceable items if left untreated.
Important:
- Mothballs do not work on carpet beetles.
- There are very few EPA approved treatments for carpet beetles
- They tend to avoid surface treatments, making over-the-counter sprays largely ineffective.
