Types of Wasp Nests
There are as many different types of wasp nests as there are wasp species. Some of the wasp nests we see more frequently in the Mid-Atlantic states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland include:
Paper Wasp Nests
Paper wasps aren’t the most aggressive of wasps, but they do tend to build their nests in locations that are often well hidden and put them in direct conflict with homeowners and their families. They have been known to build their nests near windows, above doorways, behind shutters, underneath decks, and near electrical boxes. These are places where people can often get very close to the nest without even seeing it. Paper wasp nests are best handled from a distance or when wearing a protective suit.

Bald-Faced Hornet Nests
While called “Hornets” Bald-Faced Hornets are actually a particularly large and aggressive strain of wasp. Their nests are usually found a good distance off the ground in trees and tall bushes 10-12 feet off the ground. Bald-Faced Hornets tend to build large nests, occasionally the size of a basketball or larger, and defend them aggressively. Unlike many other stinging insects, Bald-Faced Hornets don’t need to feel directly threatened to attack, you just need to wander into their territory. If you don’t want to get stung, dealing with their nests should be left to the professionals.

Mud Dauber Nests
While Mud Daubers are among the least threatening of all wasp species, their nests can still be problems. As implied by their names, their nests are made of mud. Mud daubers are fond of building their nests on walls and inside of garages.

Yellow Jacket Nests
Unlike other wasps, Yellow Jackets don’t always create large, visible nests. They tend to build their nests in confined and protected areas, usually underground, but frequently in more troublesome areas, including inside gaps between your walls. Depending on the location, treatment procedures may not involve removing the nest because it could lead to minor damage to your property, especially if the nest is located inside your home. Also, not handling a Yellow Jacket nest carefully may actually cause the yellow jackets to break through your walls and into your home where they can be far more dangerous than they are outside.

Wasp nest removal isn’t always a simple one-step process. While it might not seem like common sense, destroying or removing the nest too early can fail to destroy the colony. When treating a nest, it’s always important to give the process time to succeed. If not timed correctly, removing a nest will simply cause a wasp colony to reestablish itself elsewhere. If you hire Viking to get rid of your wasp nest, we will come back and get rid of any new nests that establish themselves over the duration of your contract.
