The community of Bryn Mawr was originally part of the vast land charter King Charles II gave to William Penn in 1681. Two years later, in 1683, a Quaker named Rowland Ellis bought an 800-acre tract of land from Penn. He briefly returned to his homeland but fled to escape religious persecution and settled in Bryn Mawr, where he built a two-story stone home. The name Bryn Mawr means “great hill” in Welsh. Ellis chose to name his new home after his farm in Wales.
Ellis’ home still stands today, although he could not afford the upkeep and sold it and a good portion of his land to tobacco planter Richard Harrison in 1719. Harrison then renamed the farm and home “Harriton House.”
Many early settlers of Bryn Mawr were family members from Wales. The town was called Humphreyville until the Pennsylvania Railroad bought land to construct its Main Line in 1857 and renamed it Bryn Mawr. With the railroad came new settlers establishing homes, particularly the wealthy looking to build sprawling country residences. Today, Bryn Mawr is a thriving community and home to Bryn Mawr College.
Local Weather and Plant Life’s Role in Pest Control Needs
Bryn Mawr experiences all seasons, with hot, wet, and humid summers and cold and snowy winters. It is often cloudy and receives an above-average 48 inches of yearly rainfall. Despite its proximity to Philadelphia, Bryn Mawr offers plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities. Ashbridge Park is a favorite playground for kids, and there are many hiking trails and camping sites nearby for those who love spending time in nature.
Plentiful vegetation and favorable weather patterns are the preferred environments for many pests, including mice, rats, and many species of insects. This combination offers a multitude of opportunities for shelter, along with all the resources required to sustain large pest populations. Unfortunately, numbers don’t fall once colder weather sets in. Instead, pests seek shelter from the plummeting temperatures inside local homes and businesses.
